How do I develop my own performance measurement capability?
The fact that you're visiting this website is a good start! I've tried to load it with useful and practical information that you can start using right away to improve your knowledge about how to measure performance.
Here are some specific tips, that you might like to consider if you want to ramp up your personal capability in leading others to measure performance:
RESOURCE: Getting Started With Performance Measures (not free)
Practice the application of performance measurement yourself. This digital kit (which you can download as soon as you've purchased it) will step you through the process of designing and implementing just a few performance measures for one of your goals. A great way to pilot test a fresh and common sense approach to measuring. Read more about Getting Started With Performance Measures now.
ARTICLE: Criteria for excellent measures
It will help to have a good understanding of a foundational aspect of performance measurement: recognising good measures from bad. Review and practice applying this simple checklist of criteria of excellent measures and you might be surprised at how quickly you can tune into some of the important aspects of measuring performance well.
ARTICLE: Six performance measure facilitator attributes
Over the last 5 or so years, there seems to be an ever-increasing number of organisations that are creating a new role in the corporate office: the Performance Measurement Officer. This person is responsible for facilitating the design, reporting and use of performance information in decision making about organisational results and improvement, usually across the entire organisation. This calls for some very specific attributes, and these six should be considered the bare minimum.
AUDIO: Building internal performance measurement capability
This teleseminar recording from early 2008 was an interview with a couple of my most amazing clients - people that took the lead in their organisations to develop more meaningful performance measures. This is about their experiences, their learnings and the process they followed to achieve it. Listen for free, now.
TRAINING: Performance Measure Blueprint Workshop (not free)
This 2-day public workshop, which I run 3 times a year, is one of the best ways to learn the step by step process of performance measurement, from deciding what results to measure, designing measures, getting buy-in, through to reporting and using measures for performance improvement.
Check out the next scheduled Performance Measure Blueprint Workshop now (this takes you to the detailed workshop webpage).
