If you're a Corporate Planner, Business Analyst, Performance Measurement Practitioner or Consultant, and you truly believe in the transformational power of measuring what matters, but you're:
- struggling to engage managers and colleagues to feel even a fraction of your passion for measuring and managing performance
- feeling isolated in the performance field, where too few people around you have mastered it sufficiently
- searching for better performance measurement practices, that make it easier and quicker to get people measuring what matters
- wanting to make a profound and transformational difference through your work, by helping others to more quickly and easily reach business or organisational goals
- ready to invest in yourself and your career, and grow your professional expertise in performance measurement and performance management
... then we're two peas from the same pod!
This is very much how I personally felt for the first 10 years or so of my career as a Performance Measurement Practitioner.
But now's a different story: 16 years since starting my career as a Performance Measurement Practitioner, I'm routinely engaging even the greatest cynics in performance measurement, I'm connected to a world-wide network of leading performance measurement experts, I'm using and teaching performance measurement techniques that work for my clients time and again.
And I see myself very much as a performance leader, someone who stands for the idea that all businesses and organisations can be (and should be) transformed through measuring what matters, someone who actively and continuously pursues that vision.
You are a performance leader too,
and the world needs you!
Fiona Issel, who attended my Performance Measure Bluerpint Workshop in 2007, became a charter member of my Measures & More Mastermind and also one of the real-life case study interviews I did as part of this program. Fiona is a shining example of what you can achieve when you see yourself as a performance leader, and not just someone who does performance measurement when they get the opportunity.
In my interview with Fiona, she said something very wise:
"This was the first thing I learnt in this role was that you have to embrace the persona of being the champion of performance measures and always have this in front of you regardless of what people think or perceive your role to be. You must be strong enough to correct people and say this is what I do and this is the level of professionalism that I expect from you."
In two years, Fiona experienced a 180 degree flip, from being seen by her internal customers as the one who chases people for data for annoying performance reports, to being chased by those same people for the latest issue of those performance reports, and for advice on how to measure and how to improve their performance. Even the most cynical managers in her organisation are now her greatest advocates.
If we want our organisations to embrace performance measurement, to take responsibility for performance and take strategic and operational goals seriously, it's not them that have to change. It's us.
We have to step up and lead the performance revolution. We have to be bold and confident and committed, like Fiona was (and still is). We have to find the ways that will engage people in measuring what matters. We have to grow and develop our skills and knowledge and confidence. We have to open up to learn from the successes and failures and ideas of others. We have to embody the persona of "performance measurement champion", as Fiona said.
And this performance leadership role will, for many of us, demand more skill and expertise and professionalism than we currently have.
Don't do what I did -
it's too hard and takes too long!
Aside from my manager, who hired me as the Measurement Consultant for a rail corporation in 1993, I was a lone voice for performance measurement in my organisation.
My manager always said to me that I had to become a good marketer, to make measurement "sexy" so people would become interested in it and give their time to it.
I had no mentors, so had to figure out what worked and what didn't by trial and error. I had to be bold, and be prepared to fall on my face many times before I got it right.
Probably the worst experience I had, which brought me to tears in the ladies' restroom afterwards, was when I was literally screamed at by a Safety Manager who took one look at the time series chart I had made for him, which showed no change in performance for over two years.
Now I understand why he screamed at me (it showed his strategies had been ineffective and he lost face in front of his peers), but that was the start of how I learned ways to get buy-in from people to measuring performance.
I was also tired of the superficial information I was learning from conferences and training courses, where no-one got any more specific about the how-to process for performance measurement other than to say "now, develop KPIs".
So I found myself piecing together ideas from other fields, like psychology and quality management and process improvement and mathematical statistics and systems thinking, to build those detailed how-to steps I craved, to make the impact I so wanted to make.
That's how my own end-to-end, step-by-step performance measurement approach, PuMP, was born.
But, I had to learn almost exclusively
from my own experience.
Now, learning from your own experience is a good thing, but not when that's your primary source of learning! You make mistakes you don't have to, and you miss out of the benefits on short cuts and strategies that are working wonders for others.
Even Fiona Issel needed some help to achieve the transformation in her organisation in those 2 years (which she originally got at the Performance Measure Blueprint Workshop and continues to get as a Measures & More Mastermind member).
Learning only by trial and error is why it takes too long to build a performance measurement system that transforms your organisation, and why it will take so much of your energy and passion that you'll likely burn out before you make a real difference.
Do you relate to this?
Let's learn how to be outstanding
Performance Measurement Practitioners,
with and from each other.
Reading a performance measurement book won't do it. Neither will attending a performance measurement conference or single training event. Exploring performance measurement websites won't do it (no, not even my website!). Being ad hoc and inconsistent about our learning most certainly won't do it.
And, of course, waiting for our organisational and business leaders to "see the light" certainly won't do it!
The fastest way to transform our organisations and businesses through measuring what matters is to rally together and share our successes, our failures, our questions, our fears, our aspirations, to actively and continuously test and learn what works, and all the time stay focused and inspired on making a difference.
We'll all grow and achieve so much faster if we learn with and from each other.
Are you ready to take action?
What I'm passionate about is the transformational power of performance measurement, its unrivalled ability to focus people on achieving what matters most, its accelerational role in ridding our businesses - our organisations, our world - of waste, and helping us shape the world into a better place for everyone.
And if you're passionate about this too, then my guess is that you're just the right person to invite into my Measures & More Mastermind.
It's a network for Performance Measurement Practitioners who take their performance career and their performance leadership role seriously, and don't want to live with the risks of learning solely from experience, isolated from a community of practice.
Measures & More is a coaching program too, that gives Performance Measurement Practitioners regular access to the latest ideas, global experts and better practices in the field of performance measurement, in bite-sized and convenient and practical chunks.

"In October, after completing my Masters, I joined the Measures & More Mastermind program so that I could keep in touch with "the latest goings on" in Business Performance Measurement. There are very few forums where people interested in formally measuring business performance (beyond just purely financial measures) can share their experiences and learn from each other, and this is where the Measures & More Mastermind program comes into its own.
"The value I get from being a Measures and More member includes:
