In running my own small business since 1999, and coaching and consulting to others, not only do I appreciate the absolute importance of measuring to get the results you want, but I also understand what it feels like trying to get the best performance from your business:

Financial reports aren't enough.
Sure, balance sheets and cashflow statements are critical business tools. But really they're often too little, too late. Once a result appears in the financial measures, the damage is already done.
We need to have meaningful measures of the drivers of financial results. But these are often harder to devise, and harder to implement.
We need practical exactly-how-do-you-do-it steps for quickly and easily deciding what to measure, choosing the most appropriate measures, designing new measures from scratch, implementing measures, reporting measures in a useful and usable way, and integrating measures seamlessly into our decision making.
