    I love your newsletters and this topic. If I were to add a 10th KPI bad habit it would be letting the data go stale by not utilizing it in real time.

    Jim – absolutely. If we’re not even going to use our data when it comes available, there’s little point in having it. A reasonable sense of urgency about using our KPIs is important to encourage.

    Hi Stacey,
    I was having a thought to myself today and found myself drawing parallels to scope management in Project Management to your podcast about designing meaningful measures. In Project Management a customer will normally provide you with a request for a project that contains information about their business needs (this is like a mission statement). As part of planning you’ll work with the customer and other stakeholders to breakdown the business needs into a set of requirements. You’ll then work with your project team to decide on how to satisfy those requirements i.e. what are you going to deliver. We use a document called a Requirements Traceability Matrix which links requirements back up to the original customer needs and downwardly to the deliverables. The document helps to prevent scope creep i.e. you only deliver what meets the requirements. I just wondered whether you had a similar tracability document in PuMP? Thus ensuring that your measures link back to critical success factors and importantly to the original mission statement and also ensures that you only have measures that are appropriate, and hence no scope creep i.e. you only measure what’s needed.
