Adam Voigt, on Measuring School Effectiveness

by Stacey Barr |

This interview with learning expert, Adam Voigt, is a collaboration where we both use the PuMP Measurability Tests technique and Measure Design technique to demonstrate a practical approach for measuring school effectiveness.

Adam Voigt is a former Teacher and School Principal who has become obsessed about learning and the high-level transformative learning that happens when we create great learning cultures.

His work in transforming dozens of Australian schools as CEO of Real Schools is well-renowned and he provides the education comment for The Project (and for our non-Aussie members, The Project is an Australian news and current affairs and talk show on TV). Adam also has a passion for bringing great learning activity, learning relationships and learning cultures to the business community – where learning can becomes a truly sustainable competitive advantage.

Adam and I collaborated on how to measure school effectiveness, and below you’ll find the video. It visually demonstrates how we used the PuMP Measurability Tests and Measure Design templates to create measures for ‘school effectiveness’.

The PuMP Measurability Tests and Measure Design templates that we used on this video are only available to PuMP graduates, in The PuMP Community.

  1. We will be developing a new funding model for our university and college system in the province. Funding has been historically based on “what did they get last year?” and then +/- depending on provincial revenues. Not a great system! any suggestions on where to start? Resources?

    • Stacey Barr says:

Angela, this is a systemically entrenched system and will be hard to shake as a single organisation. But I do like starting new conversations with the funding stakeholders using questions. Questions, in your case, like:
      — what outcomes or impacts or results do we want as a return from our college/university funding?
      — what does that return look/sound/feel like – how would we witness it in the real world?
      — are those outcomes we want from funding the same as the true purpose of the college/university?

In this blog post, the outcome that Adam Voigt and I discussed was “school effectiveness”. Yours might be different and there might be a few of them. But the same process will apply. Use this as a way to have new conversations about what should be funded.

  2. […] I was recently interviewed by measurement expert Stacey Barr.  Stacey is not only a friend and colleague.  I also consider her to be Australia’s leading authority on measuring effectiveness, establishing priority and making strategy relevant. […]
